How does the digital divide impact on social capital and what are the ramifications thereof.

What is a Digital Divide?

It is the space between people who have instant access to computers and the internet and people you don’t.

What is considered social capital?

It is an idea that connects individuals and entities that can be economically valuable. You get a job at a company through a friend of yours then you have used your social capital.


Many people think race, wealth and gender divides a nation but maybe one of the biggest divisions is a digital divide. There are many people in the world that have access to a computer and the internet but are is still many people that aren’t. We live in an age where nearly everyone has a smartphone or computer. But some people don’t because of many reasons, they can’t afford it or they do see or feel the need to be connected online. There are consequences to those people that are not online. The best way to find a job now days is on the internet, banks are at a point where most of the applications for a new card or a loan are done online. There is online shopping and many other things that people you do not have this social capital cannot benefit from it.
